Really listen to the lyrics to help you remember the scientists and the specific contributions that they made to the atomic model.

Study Guide (Due 21st)

STUDY GUIDE: Atoms, Chemical Bonds etc.

The following has been designed to make you successful on the first Chemistry test. This study guide is only meant to help guide what you are studying. Make sure to also study your notes, the book, worksheets and labs from class.

Answer these questions on the back of this sheet or a separate piece of paper!!

  1. What are the names and charges of sub-atomic particles?
  2. What is an isotope?
  3. How do you calculate the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an element?
  4. Who are the scientists involved in the research of the atom?
  5. What is the order of the scientists that helped research and discover the atom?
  6. What were the main contributions of each scientist?
  7. Draw a Bohr diagram for Si (Silicon).
  8. Draw a Lewis dot diagram/electron dot diagram for SI (Silicon)
  9. How many electrons are on each of the shells/energy levels?
  10. How do you read the periodic table to learn specific information for each element?
  11. What is a period?
  12. How may periods are there on the periodic table?
  13. What makes an element reactive?
  14.  How can you predict reactions between atoms?
  15. What makes an element stable?
  16. What are the names of the “families” on the periodic table?
  17. What are the main properties of metals?
  18. What is an ion?
  19. How does an ion form?
  20. List the general characteristics of ionic, covalent and metallic bonds
  21. Write out a balanced formula for the following ionic bond: Mg and Cl
  22. List the elements in the following formula and how many there are for each: CaCO3
  23. Draw a bond diagram for the following two molecules: H2O and CH4

Awesome Liquid Nitrogen Video! Check it out!

Some things to consider about this video:
1. Why did the rubber band hold it's shape after being inserted into the liquid nitrogen?
2. Why did the balloon shrink down so much after being "dunked" in the liquid nitrogen?
3. When they put the frozen Oreo in their mouths, why did it look like smoke was coming out?

Floating in the Dead Sea!!

The dead sea has really high density, making it very easy to float (high buoyancy)!!

check it out:

Sponge Lab!

If you enjoyed the interactive on buoyancy that I showed in class today, check out SpongeLab online (http://www.spongelab.com/)! You can create a free account on this educational website (ask your parent/guardian first) and explore the fun games etc that they have to offer! If you want to see the same interactive, search "buoyancy" and then explore the options that come up- it should be under games & simulations.

Enjoy!!

HW 9/29

For tonight's homework you will watch a brain pop video (http://www.brainpop.com/science/scientificinquiry/scientificmethod/).
The log in information is: tierralindams and the password is: brainpop.

Once you finish watching the video*, click "take quiz" at the end and select the GRADED quiz. Print out** when you are done and you will turn in the printed graded quiz to me tomorrow.

*If you do not have internet access at home, you may use the library after school. If you cannot go to the library, please read section 2 of chapter one and answer the "reviewing key concepts" at the end.
**If you do not have a printer, you may write the questions and answers on a piece of binder paper to turn in.
